How many steps to close your Move ring?

Your Move ring counts active Calories, not steps, so the answer depends on your goal, your body and how fast you walk. Enter them below to see how many steps it would take by walking alone. That is a ceiling: most days need fewer, because everything else you do fills the ring too.

Walking-only estimate from lab formulas (Compendium of Physical Activities). Apple Watch counts all movement and often credits walking more generously, so most people close the ring with fewer steps. Your watch is always right.

Walking-only steps for common Move goals

Brisk walk, 5 ft 7 in (170 cm), from lab formulas. Treat these as a ceiling: on a normal day the rest of your movement covers part of the goal, and Apple Watch often credits walking more than the formula does.

How the estimate works

The Move ring tracks active energy: the Calories you burn on top of what your body uses at rest. Walking burns a fairly steady amount per kilometer that scales with body weight, about 0.55 active Calories per kilogram per kilometer at a relaxed walk, 0.64 at a brisk walk and 0.96 when running. These figures come from the MET values in the Compendium of Physical Activities.

The calculator divides the Calories you still need by that cost to get a distance, then divides the distance by a stride length estimated from your height (about 40% of height at a relaxed walk, 45% brisk, 60% running). It assumes walking is the only thing filling your ring, so the result is a ceiling rather than a typical day. For a number that matches your own watch, enter yesterday’s steps and Move Calories: the calculator then uses your personal Calories per 1,000 steps instead.

Common questions

How many steps does it take to close the Move ring on Apple Watch?

It depends on your Move goal, your weight and how much else you move. By lab formulas, a 170 lb, 5 ft 7 in adult would need roughly 13,000 brisk steps to close a 500-Calorie goal by walking alone. Most people need noticeably fewer, because everyday movement and workouts fill the ring too, and Apple Watch often credits walking more generously. Enter yesterday’s steps and Move Calories above for a number based on your own watch.

How many Calories is 10,000 steps on Apple Watch?

Lab formulas put 10,000 brisk steps at about 340 active Calories for a 155 lb (70 kg), 5 ft 7 in adult, but Apple Watch owners often see more on their Move ring. The quickest way to know yours: divide yesterday’s Move Calories by yesterday’s steps.

Do steps count toward the Move ring?

Not directly. The Move ring counts active Calories from any movement: walking, cleaning, cycling, workouts. Steps are just one easy way to burn them. That is also why step totals do not decide Apple Watch competitions; ring percentages do.

Why does my Apple Watch show a different number?

Apple estimates active energy from your heart rate, motion and the age, weight and height in your Health profile, and it credits every kind of movement, not only steps. Hills, carrying things and arm swing all change the reading. Keep your Health details up to date for the most accurate ring.

Is running a faster way to close the Move ring?

Yes. Running burns about one and a half times as many Calories per kilometer as walking, and each stride is longer, so you need far fewer steps and much less time. A brisk walk is still the easiest option to sustain every day.

Can I set my Move goal in kilojoules?

Yes. In the Watch app on iPhone, open Workout, then Units of Measure, and pick kilojoules. One Calorie (kcal) is 4.184 kJ. The calculator above accepts both.
