The Fitbit challenges alternative for Apple Watch

Fitbit’s Challenges and Adventures are gone, and Apple’s competition is one-on-one only. Competo gives your old Fitbit group a new home: one code, everyone on one leaderboard, scored from Apple Health.

What replaced Fitbit challenges on Apple Watch? Nothing from Apple.

When Google retired Fitbit’s Workweek Hustle, Weekend Warrior, Goal Day and Daily Showdown in March 2023, a lot of friend groups lost the one feature that kept them moving. Switching to Apple Watch does not bring it back: the Fitness app lets you share rings and challenge exactly one friend for seven days. There is no group leaderboard.

Competo is the closest thing on Apple Watch. It reads the same Activity ring and step data from Apple Health, puts everyone in a private group on one leaderboard, and starts a new race every week without anyone re-inviting anyone. For a Fitbit-style event with a finish line, a Competo challenge runs 3, 7 or 14 days, as individuals or two teams.

Fitbit challenge → Competo equivalent

On FitbitIn CompetoHow it works
Workweek Hustle / Weekend WarriorWeekly group raceA private group with one leaderboard that resets automatically every week. Scored from Activity rings (up to 600 points a day), so beginners can beat marathoners who coast.
Goal DayDaily 600-point capEvery day everyone can earn up to 200 points per ring. Closing all three rings is the daily “goal”; the week decides the winner.
Daily ShowdownGroup challenge, 3 daysA fixed-length challenge with a start date, a locked result and optional loser-buys stakes. Pick ring points or steps.
Step challenges with friendsStep challenge (Apple Health steps)Most steps wins over 3, 7 or 14 days. Steps come from Apple Watch or iPhone, so a friend without a watch can still join. No manual entries.
Family Account leaderboardsGroup of any sizeParents, kids and grandparents on one leaderboard. Everyone needs an iPhone; ring competitions also need an Apple Watch.
Adventures (virtual routes)No equivalentCompeto does not do virtual routes or maps. If that was the part you loved, Competo is not the app for it.
Cheers and tauntsNot yetThere is no in-app chat or nudging. Most groups keep the banter in the group chat and share the weekly results card there.

Groups that moved over

The old Workweek Hustle crew

Five friends, all on Apple Watch now, one weekly race that never needs re-inviting.

Families with a Fitbit history

Parents and kids on one leaderboard. Effort-based scoring keeps a 12-year-old and a 50-year-old in the same race.

Office step challenges

A 14-day step challenge for the team, two departments as sides, coffee on the losers.

Mixed devices

Honest answer: if half the group is still on Fitbit or Android, use a cross-platform app. Competo is for groups on Apple Watch.

Fitbit to Apple Watch: challenge FAQ

What happened to Fitbit challenges?

Google retired Fitbit Challenges, Adventures and open groups on 27 March 2023. Fitbit devices still track activity, but the Workweek Hustle, Weekend Warrior, Goal Day and Daily Showdown group challenges are gone.

Does Apple Watch have group challenges like Fitbit?

No. Apple’s Fitness app supports Activity Sharing with friends and a one-on-one, seven-day competition. There is no group leaderboard and no team format. That is the gap Competo fills.

Can my friends who still use Fitbit join?

Not a ring competition: Competo reads Activity rings from Apple Health, which needs an Apple Watch. For step challenges, an iPhone alone is enough. Friends on Fitbit or Android would need a cross-platform app such as MoveTogether or GymRats instead.

How does scoring compare to Fitbit’s step counts?

Competo’s weekly race scores Move, Exercise and Stand ring progress as a percentage of each person’s own goals, up to 600 points a day. Step challenges use raw Apple Health step counts, like Fitbit did.

Is Competo free?

Yes. Weekly group competitions are free with no group size limit. Joining a challenge is free; creating a challenge requires Competo Premium.

Do I have to send invites like Apple’s Activity Sharing?

No. One person creates a private group and shares a code; everyone else pastes it into Join group. There is no invite flow that can get stuck on pending.
