Apple Watch group challenge: everyone in, or team vs team
Apple’s Fitness app can’t run a group challenge: its competitions are two people and its “challenges” are solo badges. A Competo challenge has a start date, a finish line, a locked result, and any number of players.
Free to join · iPhone + Apple Watch (iPhone alone for step challenges)
- Individuals or two teams
- Ring points or steps
- 3, 7 or 14 days

Can you do a group challenge on Apple Watch?
Not with Apple’s own tools. The Fitness app’s competition is a seven-day, two-person ring contest with no teams, no steps option, and no way to set stakes. Its monthly “challenges” are personal badges. That is fine for one rival, and useless for a friend group, a family, or two office departments.
A Competo group challenge is built for exactly that: pick the format, the scoring, and the length; share one code; and everyone competes on the same dashboard until the results lock. Want a standing weekly race instead of a one-off event? That is a group competition, not a challenge.
How an Apple Watch group challenge works in Competo
Set it up
Name the challenge, choose individual or team format, pick ring points or steps, set 3, 7, or 14 days and a start date. Add stakes if you like.
Invite with a code
Share the code or the invitation card. Everyone reviews the rules, picks a team if it is a team challenge, and confirms they are in.
It runs itself
The challenge starts automatically at midnight on the start date. Standings, team totals, rules, and stakes stay visible on the shared dashboard.
Results lock
After the final day, Competo briefly finalizes late Apple Health data, then locks the winner, standings, and any tie. Share the results card.
Ring points follow Apple’s formula: up to 200 per ring, 600 per day. See how points work → Want a “most steps wins” contest instead? Read about the Apple Watch step challenge.
Team vs team on Apple Watch
Two sides, one scoreboard
Choose the two-team format when you create the challenge. Everyone who joins picks a side; each team’s total is the sum of its members’ ring points or steps.
Fair by rule, not by trust
Require equal team sizes so nobody wins on headcount. Scores come straight from Apple Health: no manual entries, no editing.
Built for real rivalries
Sales vs Engineering on steps for 14 days. The Smiths vs the Joneses on rings for a week. Couple vs couple over a long weekend.

Friends, individual
“July Ring Battle”: seven days, ring points, four friends, one winner, loser buys pizza.
Team vs team
“Smiths vs Jones”: 14 days, ring points, two families, combined scores decide it.
Office departments
Sales vs Engineering on steps, equal team sizes required, coffee on the losers.
Couple vs couple
Two teams of two for a long weekend. Three days is plenty.
Apple Watch group challenge FAQ
Can you do a group challenge on Apple Watch?
Not with what Apple ships. The Fitness app’s competition is always two people, and its monthly “challenges” are solo badges. A group challenge with a start date, a finish line and one ranking needs a third-party app such as Competo, which reads Activity ring and step data from Apple Health.
How is this different from Apple’s monthly challenges?
Apple’s monthly and limited-edition challenges are personal goals that award a badge; nobody else is involved. A Competo group challenge ranks real people against each other and locks a winner when it ends.
How is a group challenge different from a Competo group?
A group is an ongoing weekly leaderboard that resets automatically. A challenge is a one-off event with a start date, an end date, a locked final result, and optional stakes. Challenge teams exist only inside that challenge.
How does team vs team scoring work?
Each team’s score is the sum of its members’ points or steps, not the average. The creator can require equal team sizes so a bigger team cannot win on headcount.
What are the stakes?
Optional and friendly: “just for fun” or “loser treats the winner” with pizza, coffee, burgers, or a custom treat. For team challenges the losing team treats the winning team. Competo does not handle money or enforce it.
Can people join after it starts?
No. Everyone must enter the code and confirm before the start time. If a team is empty or the numbers do not meet the rules, the challenge waits in “Needs participants” until the creator fixes it or reschedules.
Do we all need an Apple Watch?
For ring-point challenges, yes. For step challenges, iPhone-recorded steps count too, so a watch-less friend can join.
Is it free?
Joining any challenge is free. Creating one requires Competo Premium.
Prefer a standing weekly race that never needs setting up again? That is a Competo group competition. Coming from Fitbit? Here is how Competo replaces Fitbit challenges.
